DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class directs the work of a radio shop engaged in
the installation, maintenance and repair of two-way radio systems and related
communications and electronic equipment, including GPS (global positioning
systems), MDC (mobile data communications), mobile video camera systems, siren
and PA systems. The incumbent
supervises a staff of communications mechanics, and plans their work schedules.
Work is performed under the general
direction of an administrative supervisor and is reviewed through periodic
conferences and reports. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assigns and reviews the
work of Communications Mechanics and Communications Mechanic II's working in
the shop, and develops work schedules for staff;
Prepares an annual budget
for the shop by determining additional equipment, tools and cabling the unit
will need for vehicle radio and electronics installation services;
Evaluates and recommends
new radio equipment installations for police vehicles;
Supervises installation and maintenance
of GPS, MDC, video camera systems, mobile video camera systems, electronic
siren and PA systems;
Supervises radio installation services
provided to other County agencies, as directed by an administrative supervisor;
Determines installation
procedures and creates a timetable for work performed by the unit;
Orders parts and supplies
needed for repairs, and maintains a complete inventory of radio and electronic
equipment installed in police vehicles;
Assists in writing and
evaluating bid proposals and service contracts;
Manages the spare parts
and shop inventory.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough technical knowledge of radio telephone installations; thorough
technical knowledge of testing, maintenance and repair of equipment used in
vehicular communication systems or alarm systems, including GPS, MDC, mobile
video camera systems, electronic siren and PA systems; thorough technical
knowledge of mobile emergency warning and alarm systems; good knowledge of
pertinent Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations governing
radio installations; ability to detect defects in electronic systems and to
determine necessary corrective measures; ability to assist in the writing and
evaluation of bid proposals and service contracts for these systems; ability to
design and evaluate new equipment; ability to follow oral and written
directions; ability to plan and supervise the work of personnel in a manner
conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain records for
equipment installed; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both
orally and in written reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands
of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
EITHER
a)
Graduation from high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years
of experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of two-way
communications systems, including general electrical and electromechanical
equipment; or,
b)
Seven (7) years of
experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of two-way
communications systems, including general electrical and electromechanical
equipment; or,
c)
An equivalent
combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and
(b).
PROMOTIONAL
Two years as a
Communications Mechanic II.
