DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs elementary technical work on electrical, electronic and communications systems and related power supply equipment. Work may include installation, maintenance, testing and repair of communications equipment including mobile and two-way radios, ethernet wiring and cables and emergency notification systems.  This work may be performed in the field under the direct supervision of a technical superior.  Assign­ment of the work schedules will be made by a technical superior or others so designated.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Installs, maintains and repairs two-way public safety communications systems;

            May install and maintain necessary base stations, antennas, consoles, portables, switching matrixes, mobiles, vehicular repeaters, signal alarms, microwave, and other electronic/electro-mechanical devices and related power supply equipment under the direction of a technical superior;

            Tests communications systems, emergency warning systems including power monitoring and outage warning equipment, and alarm systems, etc, to diagnose problems or identify faulty components;

            Replaces faulty components in the system and refers the components to Communications Technicians for repair.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good technical knowledge of radio telephone installations; good tech­nical knowledge of testing, maintenance and repair of equipment used in communications or alarm systems; good knowledge of the principles and practices of electronic installation; good technical knowledge of mobile emergency warning and alarm systems; working knowledge of pertinent Federal Communications Com­mission rules and regulations governing radio installations; ability to detect defects in electronic systems and to determine necessary corrective measures; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep simple and accurate reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the posi­tion.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            Either:

            (a) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of two-way communications systems, or general electrical systems with electro-mechanical equipment; or,

           

            (b) Five (5) years of experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of two-way communications systems, or general electrical systems with electro-mechanical equipment; or,

           

            (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
