DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class supervises and participates in the performance of elementary technical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of mobile and other two-way radio systems and related communication and electronic equipment.  The incumbent may serve as a shop crew leader or work independently at remote tower sites.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a technical superior.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Provides elementary technical assistance to Communications Mechanics and supervises a shop crew of subordinates;

          Installs, maintains and repairs two-way public safety communications systems;

          Installs and maintains necessary base stations, antennas, consoles, portables, switching matrixes, mobiles, vehicular repeaters, signal alarms, microwave, and other electronic/electro-mechanical devices;

          Tests communications systems, emergency warning systems, and alarm systems to diagnose problems or identify faulty components;

          Replaces faulty components in the system and refers the components to Communications Technicians for repair.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good technical knowledge of radio telephone installations; good technical knowledge of testing, maintenance and repair of equipment used in communications or alarm systems; good knowledge of the principles and practices of electronic installation; good technical knowledge of mobile emergency warning and alarm systems; working knowledge of pertinent Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations governing radio installations; ability to detect defects in electronic systems and to determine necessary corrective measures; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep simple and accurate reports; ability to lead the work of subordinate employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to work independently under adverse conditions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Either:

          (a) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of two-way communications systems, including general electrical and electro-mechanical equipment; or,

         

          (b) Six (6) years of experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of two-way communications systems, including general electrical and electro-mechanical equipment; or,

         

          (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b); or,

          (d) One (1) year of experience as a Communications Mechanic.
