DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs supervisory work in the development and implementation of a formal program of automotive equipment maintenance and repair.  Supervision is exercised over a large number of automotive personnel through lower-level supervisors.  Work is re­viewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences and written reports.  Performs related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Develops and implements automotive and construction equipment maintenance and repair programs;

Supervises and directs the activities of a large number of mechanics through lower level supervisors;

          Diagnoses causes of equipment failure and malfunction;

Evaluates condition of equipment; makes recommendations of equipment replacement or repair;

          Assists in preparing equipment specifications and departmental budgets;

          Prepares purchase orders for tools, equipment, parts, materials and supplies;

Evaluates maintenance and repair programs and makes recommendations to improve efficiency and economy;

Provides technical data to purchasing department pertaining to mechan­ical specifications and replacement needs.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and tools of automotive maintenance and repair; comprehensive knowledge of the principles of operation and maintenance and repair characteristics of a variety of con­struction and automotive equipment; ability to supervise and instruct lower level supervisors and skilled mechanics in a manner conducive to full perform­ance and high morale; ability to maintain comprehensive maintenance and repair records for a large number of construction and automotive vehicles; ability to present reports clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to understand and interpret complex technical drawings and specifica­tions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          (a) Completion of two (2) years of vocational education courses in either a vocational school program or in an apprentice or training program in automotive mechanics and five (5) years of work experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, including at least two (2) years in a position involving responsibility for the supervision of a wide range of repair work on a fleet of vehicles; or,

          (b) Seven (7) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, including at least two (2) years in a position involving responsibility for the supervision of a wide range of repair work on a fleet of vehicles; or,

          (c) An equivalent combination of the above education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years as an Automotive Mechanic IV.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of the appropriate license issued by the New York State Depart­ment of Motor Vehicles.  The type of license required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated; license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
