DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, an employee in this class operates motor vehicles and diesel or gasoline-powered equipment used in maintaining County roads and facilities in response to major storm events. The primary work responsibility is for the efficient operation of the assigned vehicle and for the safe transportation of materials and equipment from place to place.  The incumbent is responsible for the routine maintenance of the assigned vehicle(s) and, when not driving, performs manual labor.  Work receives periodic checks while in progress and upon completion for adherence to established policy and procedures.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Operates motor vehicles to plow and salt roads and facilities during snow events;

            Operates dump truck body to displace or unload sand, gravel and other materials while truck is standing or moving;

            Operates power machinery such as cement mixers, belt conveyors, air compressors, sod cutters, chain saws and pumping equipment;

            Performs manual labor to load and unload vehicles, shovel show, remove debris from roadside, and clear sewer basins and lines;

            Operates a basin cleaner used for removing dirt from catch basins;

            Carries out routine maintenance and other repair work on assigned vehicles;

            Sets flags and barricades; participates generally in the work of the labor or maintenance crew;

            May act as a lead worker depending on assignment.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of Suffolk County roads; good knowledge of the operation, maintenance and use of trucks and equipment used in snow removal and highway related work; good knowledge of motor vehicle regulations governing the use of equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in the operation of equipment; ability to make emergency repairs and to assist in making general repairs to motor vehicles and related equipment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

           

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of six (6) school grades.

 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates must possess a valid CDL license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.  License must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
