FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class operates heavy equipment with complex controls requiring a relatively high degree of skill and manipulative ability. Work of this class is different from that in the class of Automotive Equipment Operator in that the incumbents operate more complex and specialized equipment and are required to exercise considerably more skill and care in the operation of their equipment to do their assigned tasks. Incumbents are responsible for the routine maintenance of equipment and may be required to perform related manual labor. On specific assignments, work is closely supervised; however, on routine assignments, supervision is general in nature. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Operates front-end loader, two (2) cubic yards or larger;
Operates 10 wheel dump trucks to
haul sand, gravel, tools or equipment; operates dump body to displace or unload
sand, gravel and other materials, while truck is standing or moving;
Operates 10 wheel garbage packers;
Operates large flatbed trucks used
for transporting heavy equipment;
Operates tractor-trailers;
Operates sewer maintenance
combination high-pressure jet and vacuum cleaner;
Operates street-sweeper used in
keeping highways clean;
Operates a snow blower used for
clearing highways of snow;
Operates a small tracked vehicle
with a special blade used for digging and clearing drainage ditches on marshlands
for the prevention of mosquito larvae;
Operates backhoe for digging
trenches, leaching pools and precast holes;
Operates semi or full trailers,
rolloffs and rollers for leveling dirt;
Operates small bulldozers (72 hp and
below) for moving dirt and digging sumps;
Operates tank-testing equipment;
Operates equipment necessary for the
fabrication and installation of large roadway signs;
Operates line paint machines and
dump trucks with trailers and tractors;
Checks working condition of
equipment; gives routine service and maintenance;
May operate large tractors with
hydraulic accessories;
May transport accident vehicles,
possibly containing hazardous materials;
May supervise work of lower level
employees.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the operating and repair
characteristics of heavy automotive equipment; good knowledge of the component
parts, operating principles, and maintenance needs of heavy equipment; good knowledge
of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation
of heavy equipment; good knowledge of traffic laws and other regulations
governing the operation of heavy equipment; skill in the operation of
moderately complex construction and transportation equipment; ability to
service various types of relatively heavy equipment and to make running
repairs; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Either:
a) Completion of six (6) school
grades, and one (1) year of experience in the operation of heavy automotive
equipment; or
b) One (1) year of experience as an
Automotive Equipment Operator.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must possess the
appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor
Vehicles. Type of license will be
determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to
be operated. License must be maintained
throughout employment in this position.
To be employed by the Department of
Public Works Division of Vector Control, candidates may be required to possess
a Category 8 Pesticide Applicator License issued by the New York State
Department of Environmental Conservation.
Candidates may be required to
possess a commercial driver's license with tanker and hazardous materials
endorsement. License must be maintained
throughout employment in this position.
