DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, an employee in this class performs skilled work in the operation of heavy motor driven earth moving and/or sewage process and maintenance equipment.  The incumbent is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy highway construction equipment.  Duties of the class require considerable skill in working to engi­neering grades, in operating very heavy equipment, in working efficiently so as not to impede the progress of related operations, and in completing a finished construction project.  Supervision consists primarily of job performance checks made at work site.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Operates a B-30 well driller; drills, installs and samples wells;

         Operates a land or water based crane; picks up, spots and places materials where indicated by supervisor;

         Operates a power grader on construction and maintenance work; blades sub grades; blades finished grade to engineering specifications;

         Operates a heavy-duty roller in compacting material;

         Operates a heavy bulldozer used in earth moving operations and demolition;

         Operates asphalt distributors and/or autonomous pavers;

         Operates minor construction and automotive equipment when needed;

         Checks working condition of equipment; performs routine service and maintenance;

         Operates compactor in landfill operations;

         Transports and operates mobile waste sludge dewatering rig;

         Operates tractor-trailer assembly with centrifugal and vacuum loading configuration;

         May supervise work of lower level employees.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance, adaptabilities, limita­tions, and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assignment is made; skill in the operation of complex maintenance and construction equipment; skill in the preparation and addition of polymerizing reagents, regulation of sludge feed and withdrawal rates; ability to make emergency repairs and to assist in making general repairs of motor driven and other construction equipment; ability to operate equipment safely adjacent to above or below ground utilities; ability to interpret New York State Code 53 utility markouts; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to prepare simple reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         Either:

         a) Completion of six (6) school grades, and one (1) year of experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment; or

         b) One (1) year of experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

         Candidates must possess the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.  Type of license will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated.  License must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

         To be employed by the Department of Public Works Division of Vector Control, candidates may be required to possess a Category 8 Pesticide Applicator License issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
