DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class transports vehicles from crime or accident scenes to the Police Department’s impound facility. The vehicles towed may contain hazardous materials and evidentiary matter. The incumbent is also expected to tow decommissioned and disabled department vehicles. Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior officer. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Operates large flatbed trucks to
transport vehicles;
Operates tow trucks to transport
vehicles;
May drive tractor trailers involved in
accidents;
May drive army all-terrain vehicles;
Maintains and makes minor repairs to
vehicles;
May transport accident and crime scene
vehicles, possibly containing hazardous materials;
May transport disabled department
vehicles and decommissioned cars;
Confers with the commanding officer on
the scene to determine the best way to retrieve vehicles;
Rigs and secures vehicles;
Maintains chain of evidence while
securing and transporting vehicles;
Maintains records of vehicles
transported that may be used in court.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the operation,
maintenance and repair characteristics of heavy automotive equipment; good
knowledge of the component parts, operating principles, and maintenance needs
of heavy equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary
safety precautions involved in the operation of heavy equipment containing
hazardous materials; good knowledge of the traffic laws and other regulations
governing the use of heavy equipment; skill in the operation of moderately
complex heavy equipment; good knowledge of departmental procedures in
safeguarding material evidence; ability to service various types of relatively
heavy equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written
instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
(a) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in the operation of medium weight flatbed trucks or tow trucks to transport accident vehicles; or
(b)
One (1) year of experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
Candidates
must possess the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of
Motor Vehicles. Type of license will be
determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to
be operated. License must be maintained
throughout employment in this position.
Candidates
may be required to possess a commercial driver’s license with tanker and
hazardous materials endorsement.
