DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs responsible duties involving the transport of a variety of items. Work differs from that of a Driver Messenger in that responsibility is assumed for transport of significant amounts of cash on a regular basis or transport of hazardous Health Department substances, or the processing and transport of large amounts and variety of mail through the central County mailroom. The incumbent is responsible for associated clerical tasks, various other deliveries, mail delivery and routine vehicle maintenance. Work may require travel outside the County. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            May transport significant amounts of cash and checks for deposit to banks; plans daily schedule so that deposits reach banks in time for maximum earnings;

            May deliver X-rays, pharmaceutical products, contaminated foods, infectious waste material or health supplies including dated vaccines or other items requiring special handling;

            May process mail through the central County mailroom servicing a majority of County departments;

            May pick up and deliver large amounts of mail to several County departments; answers routine questions related to mail processing;

            May transport high priority checks, certificates and mail to and from all County departments;

            May file cancelled checks and associated documents in vault; purges files within prescribed record retention schedules;

            May deliver subpoenaed or other confidential files to Administration, legal departments or courts;

            May pick up, deliver certified, registered or regular mail, and insure its prompt delivery;

            Performs routine clerical tasks as required;

            May perform a variety of tasks involving the use of specialized machines related to mail processing;

            Performs minor maintenance for assigned vehicle by checking gas, oil, tire pressure and general running condition.        

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of County geography, roads and traffic regulations; some knowledge of office practices and procedures; ability to schedule deliveries within time limitations; ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and effi­ciently in traffic and under all weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; trustworthiness and reliability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and either:

            Two (2) years of driving experience as a messenger, courier, or other paid driver responsible for the transport of passengers or materials; or,

            Two (2) years of experience as a Driver Messenger.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates must possess the appropriate New York State driver's license, and maintain such license throughout employment in this title.
