DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The employee in this class performs skilled technical work in operating a dredge and its related equipment for excavation and pumping materials from underwater.  The Dredge Engine Operator is responsible for operating, maintain­ing and repairing this equipment, which controls the pumping mechanism and the movement of the dredge.  Employees are expected to exercise independent judgment and make decisions regarding repair work and procedures.  Work assignments are received from the Dredge Captain or Chief Engine Operator, who review work by inspecting the completed assignment.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Operates equipment which controls a dredge and the pumping of material from underwater locations to fill areas;

          Observes gauges continually for indication of obstructions to dredge operations and the nature of material being pumped from the bottom and trans­ferred to the fill area;

          Determines proper locations for anchors and pontoons; keeps check on swing, ladderfull, speed and anchor trip cables;

          Reports need for replacement of equipment to supervisor, or makes necessary repairs and replacements;

          Operates gasoline or diesel engines; starts, stops and controls speed of equipment;

          Checks water temperature and oil pressure and levels; keeps hourly records of readings, makes necessary adjustments; checks and pumps bilges;

          Maintains work records and log sheets.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the techniques and methods used in the operation of dredge equipment; good knowledge of the operation of gasoline and diesel engines; good knowledge of dredge operations and equipment; skill in the control of dredges and their related equipment; skill in the care and use of tools and equipment essential for the repair of dredges and their related equipment; ability to keep records of work performed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Four years of experience in the operation and maintenance of dredging equipment.
