DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direction, the Dredge Captain is responsible for supervising dredge and tugboat crews in moving, positioning and operating a dredge.  Supervision is exercised over subordinates by assigning shifts and by assigning, observing and inspecting their work.  The employee receives location assignments and survey maps from a professional engineer but works independently in positioning and directing the operations of the dredge.  Work is reviewed through written progress reports and navigation logs.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Directs navigation of a dredge and its auxiliary equipment including a tugboat;

Supervises tugboat and/or dredge crews engaged in placing dredge in proper position for excavation work;

          Supervises and is responsible for work progress in excavating operation;

Coordinates such operations with allied land fill activities involving placement and operation of pipelines and disposal of land fill on shore;

Supervises the maintenance of vessels and their operation in accordance with rules of safety;

          Requisitions and keeps inventory on supplies and parts and arranges for major repairs;

          Maintains daily records of work progress and consumption of materials and fuel;

          Makes periodic entries in navigation logs.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the methods and equipment used in dredging operations; thorough knowledge of waterway navigation and safety regulations; thorough knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; ability to plan, supervise and review the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to keep log entries in accordance with established procedures; ability to maintain a variety of records and to prepare and submit written reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of eight school grades and five years of experience in dredging operations, including two years in a supervisory capacity.
