DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class operates a power-driven drawbridge to insure safe passage of water and land traffic with a minimum of delay. The work involves the performance of related semi-skilled mechanical tasks. Duties are subject to shift variation. Work is reviewed by frequent inspection and by review of the records which the employee keeps. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Guards station at bridge
house;
Watches for approaching
water traffic and, upon proper signal from boat, checks automobile traffic and
lowers automobile gates; raises drawbridge; after passage of water traffic,
lowers drawbridge and raises automobile gates;
Keeps records of boats
and adjustments; puts on and takes off balance weights to assist operation of
bridge; reports any trouble with bridge to supervisor;
Keeps bridge house and
facilities clean and in order; paints work area as needed;
Cuts weeds, sweeps bridge
deck, and performs tasks related to the maintenance of the bridge area;
May make minor repairs
and adjustments, and lubricate machinery.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Some knowledge of the rules and regulations controlling the operation of
drawbridges crossing navigable water of the County; some knowledge of heavy
electrical motors and of power-driven hoisting machinery and equipment; skill
in the use of simple mechanical tools to maintain and adjust motors and other
bridge machinery; ability to understand and follow oral and written
instructions; ability to keep simple records and to make reports; ability to
react quickly and calmly in emergencies; physical condition commensurate with
the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to read and write English.
