DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs skilled work in the operation of auger-type and other well drilling equipment. The work involves the construction of shallow wells by the auger drilling method, and the collection of water and soil samples. Under general supervision, employees are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of drilling equipment. Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through written memoranda, conferences and completed work. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Operates auger-type and other well drilling equipment;

          Drills wells up to depths of 200 feet;

          Checks working condition of equipment;

          Performs routine service and maintenance;

          Operates controls while supervising the attachment of augers;

          Performs soil boring; collects soil cores or other samples for laboratory analysis

          Participates in the restoration of the well site which includes placing the well in a curb box or capping it, loading the augers, lowering the mast, and leveling the site to its original state;

          Maintains records pertaining to the construction of each well;

          Completes daily drilling logs; submits monthly progress reports;

          Participates in the loading of equipment;

          May supervise a well drilling crew in the field on routine, shallow drilling assignments.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles of auger-type well drilling; thorough knowledge of safety precautions to be exercised in the operation of drilling rig; skill in the use of auger-type well drilling equipment; ability to service drilling rig and keep it in good repair; ability to make emergency repairs of drilling equipment; ability to operate equipment safely adjacent to above or below ground utilities; ability to interpret New York State Code 53 utility markouts; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to prepare simple reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in the operation of auger-type well drilling equipment.

 

NOTE:  Additional relevant experience in the operation of well drilling equipment will be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The type of license required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated.  The license must be maintained throughout the employment in this title.

 

Candidates must possess the appropriate drilling license issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.  Type of license will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of drilling equipment to be operated.  License must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
