DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class acts as diver or diver tender during performance
of underwater inspections and maintenance procedures. The incumbent must be able to operate underwater lights,
television cameras, video tape recorders, measuring and gauging instruments and
diver support systems. The incumbent
conducts inflow/infiltration reduction projects using remotely operated video
and pipe-crack sealing equipment and directs related maintenance workers in the
performance of the work. Diving may be
performed during all seasons and under all weather conditions; the diver will
utilize both scuba equipment and surface supplied air. The incumbent must
prepare reports for supervisors relating to performance and progress of
underwater construction. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Inspects
diving equipment and supplies; maintains communication with submerged diver and
attends lifeline; specifies diving equipment and supplies;
Places recording and
photographic equipment underwater; operates equipment to provide inspection
material for engineering review;
Identifies
significant sources of infiltration/inflow by placing and reading flow
recording instruments and by video inspection;
Obtains core
samples;
Determines and
directs procedures to reduce infiltration/inflow;
Directs and participates
in the repair of specialized equipment such as compressors and video cameras;
Prepares reports for
supervisors describing condition of construction projects;
Communicates with
surface personnel while diving and inspecting conditions of construction and
related equipment;
Inspects connections
of sections of outfall pipe in order to monitor contract compliance;
Maintains and
repairs outfall air release chamber and diffuser stacks;
Inspects, maintain
and repair canal locks;
Inspects and repairs
underwater bridge structures;
Inspects buoys;
Participates in
ocean beach surveys and restoration;
Operates and
maintains 23 foot boat;
Makes underwater
inspection of construction and materials to see that standards are maintained.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of sewer construction work; thorough knowledge of underwater diving
and related equipment utilization and maintenance; thorough knowledge of the
use, maintenance and repair of mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment;
knowledge of interpretation of blue prints and specifications related to sewer
and bridge construction; knowledge of technology related to underwater
television filming and recording; ability to utilize equipment for obtaining
core samples from underwater surfaces; ability to perform mechanical work;
ability to plan and direct the work of maintenance workers in a manner
conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and one (1) year of experience in underwater diving which included
heavy construction work, and six (6) years of experience in the operation,
maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, valves, compressors, electrical and
mechanical equipment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a National Association of Underwater Divers Certificate or
its equivalent; employees must maintain the certificate while employed in this
position.
