DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class supervises and participates in the work of more than one labor crew engaged in multiple grounds and facilities activities in the community college. Such activities may include transportation and/or setup of furniture, furnishings, equipment, or records, and maintenance of campus grounds, walkways, roadways, etc. Supervision is exercised over crews composed of equipment operators, automotive mechanics, maintenance mechanics, and laborers and may include supervision of subordinate crew leaders. Work is performed under the general supervision of administrative personnel. Does related work as required.
Plans, supervises and participates in the work of crews responsible for the moving of furniture, supplies and equipment;
Assists with the performance of
preliminary relocation surveys to determine equipment and space requirements in
proposed new locations;
Assigns,
supervises and participates in the work of small crews engaged in patching
roadways within a building complex, reconditioning storm drains,
installing or removing signs or snow fences
or clearing snow; Supervises a small crew in painting
curbs and parking lots;
Assigns,
supervises and participates in the work of small crews involved in the
performance of grounds maintenance activities including cutting grass, trimming
hedges, planting and pruning trees and shrubbery, etc;
Transports
records for storage;
Drives
truck hauling crew, equipment and materials to and from work;
Cleans
and maintains equipment;
Submits
requests and cost estimates for required materials and equipment;
Maintains
work, equipment, attendance and time records;
Monitors
and evaluates performance of subordinates which may include seasonal personnel;
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the
principles, methods and equipment used in transportation of furniture and
equipment; good knowledge of occupational hazards of laboring work and the
necessary safety precautions; good knowledge
of standard tools and practices used in general labor work; good knowledge of
effective supervisory techniques; skill in the
use of common tools, ability to plan, assign and supervise work of men and
equipment in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to
understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep records
and make reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position; physical condition commensurate with
the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and four (4) years of experience supervising labor crews.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession
of a valid appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor
Vehicles. Type of license will be determined by the appointing authority with
respect to the assignment and the type of vehicle to be operated.
Depending upon the assignment, at the time of appointment and during
employment in the title, the employee may be required to possess a Commercial
Pesticide Applicator Certificate issued by the New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation.
