FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class supervises a number of crews engaged in pesticide application and the maintenance of drainage areas. Work involves determining work methods and procedures as well as participating in the assignments. Supervision is exercised over equipment operators and laborers. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Supervises construction and maintenance of drainage
systems in assigned sector; lays out project to previously set specifications;
Schedules and coordinates the use of
laborers, equipment operators, materials and equipment;
Supervises traveling crews engaged
in applying pesticides to breeding sites in conformance with
Performs preliminary and follow-up
surveys of breeding sites to determine control requirements and evaluate
existing procedures;
Keeps records and makes reports of
work activities and materials used.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials
and equipment common to pesticide application and the maintenance and
construction of drainage areas; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards
and the safety precautions of pesticide application; some knowledge of County
geography and topography; ability to read U.S. Coast Guard and geodetic survey
maps; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of crews in a manner
conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand, interpret
and effectively carry out written or oral instructions accompanied by
construction plans; ability to deal with the general public courteously and
tactfully; ability to keep records and make reports; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior high school or
possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and five (5) years of
experience in the maintenance and construction of drainage systems.
NOTE: Additional experience will be substituted for high school
on a year-for-year basis.
PROMOTIONAL
Three (3) years of experience as a
Construction Equipment Operator working in the Division of Vector Control for
the Suffolk County Department of Public Works.
