DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class assists in supervising and participating in the work of a small labor crew engaged in carrying out the duties of routine maintenance or fieldwork program projects at various job sites.  The incumbent assists in directing, supervising, coordinating and assigning work to temporary personnel in the performance of work activities.  Work is reviewed by a Labor Crew Leader and/or an administrative supervisor. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

               Assists in the responsibilities of supervising and participating in the work of a small labor crew engaged in routine maintenance or fieldwork program projects at various job sites;

               Assists in directing, supervising, coordinating and assigning work of temporary personnel in the performance of work activities;

               Ensures that all equipment used is cleaned, maintained and accounted for; submits reports of damaged equipment; ensures that safety procedures are followed in the absence of the supervisor;

               May submit reports of crews' progress on a daily basis; distributes program materials as requested;

               Assists in picking up litter and garbage; cuts grass and maintains park buildings as required;

               Provides information to the general public;

               Oversees the collection of park fees.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Working knowledge of standard tools and practices used in general labor work; working knowledge of the hazards of laboring work and the necessary safety precautions; working knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of temporary personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; skill in the use of common hand tools; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

               Either:

               (a) Completion of six school grades, and one (1) year of experience in                             laboring work; or,

               (b) Satisfactory equivalent combination of the above education and experience.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The type of assignment and vehicle to be operated will be determined by the appointing authority.
