DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS       

An employee in this class supervises and participates in the work of labor crews, which are responsible for the transportation of furniture, furnishings and equipment to facilitate the relocation of units, divisions or departments of County government or other local government agencies. Duties include assisting with preliminary relocation surveys to determine equipment and space requirements for staff and program needs in a proposed new location.  The employee may also oversee and lead crews in a variety of routine tasks relating to building and grounds maintenance or transport of records when relocation services are not required.  Supervision may be exercised over Labor Crew Leaders and work is performed under the general supervision of administrative personnel.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

     Plans, supervises and participates in the work of crews responsible for the moving of furniture, supplies and equipment;

     Assists with the performance of preliminary relocation surveys to determine equipment and space requirements in proposed new locations;    

     Maintains work and equipment records; 

     Supervises securing of vacant buildings owned by the County; 

     Transports records for storage; 

     May oversee and lead crews performing building and grounds maintenance tasks;

     May drive motorized equipment.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and equipment used in transportation of furniture and equipment, good knowledge of occupational hazards of laboring work and the necessary safety precautions; skill in the use of common tools, ability to plan, assign and supervise work of men and equipment in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep records and make reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience supervising labor crews, at least two (2) years of which have included the transportation of equipment and furniture. 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The type of assignment and vehicles to be operated will be determined by the appointing authority.
