DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class directs the operation of special highway construction and maintenance projects.  The incumbent coordi­nates the activities of contracted personnel, and a technical and clerical staff engaged in providing public works services.  Directions are received from an administrative supervisor who reviews the work through conferences and reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises the investigation and resolution of complaints received regard­ing public works operations;

          Coordinates the operations of outside contractors performing specialized projects, such as snow removal and parks refurbishment;

          Maintains cost records of materials and labor relating to contractors;

          Reviews work orders for accuracy and completion, and approves them for payment when appropriate;

          May act as witness on behalf of the department or jurisdiction at examinations before trial;

          Supervises the maintenance of records regarding programs' and projects' activities, equipment and costs.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and equipment used in public works projects; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions which must be taken in public works construction and maintenance; ability to plan and coordinate personnel and equipment in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare complex reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and six (6) years of experience in highway maintenance and construction work, and/or public works projects, two (2) years of which must been in a supervisory capacity.
