DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assigns, supervises and partici­pates in maintenance and repair work required on or adjacent to town roads, beach walkways or highway department buildings. The employee is responsible for instructing crewmembers in new assignments and for assuring that satisfactory work quality is maintained. Direction is received from an administrative super­visor who inspects work progress on site and reviews reports of status of current projects. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises roofing, carpentry and building modification work performed on highway department structures;

          Supervises the construction and repair of boardwalks, wooden stairways and ramps at town beaches;

          Supervises maintenance mechanics in the installation and maintenance of roadside drainage systems;

          Maintains time sheets on town employees, temporary help and rental equipment;

          Determines supply requirements for work planned and orders necessary materials.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of procedures and materials used in highway drainage system construction and repair; thorough knowledge of basic construction and maintenance procedures and materials in the areas of carpentry, masonry and roofing; good knowledge of occupational hazards and effective safety precau­tions; ability to plan, assign and supervise crew members in a manner conducive to obtaining good work results and high morale; ability to understand and effectively carry out written and oral instructions; ability to interpret maps, blueprints and other technical material; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare comprehensive reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in highway mainte­nance and/or general construction work.

         

          Notes:

          Additional education in a construction-related field from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State, or from a similarly licensed or registered trade school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.

          Additional experience as defined above may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
