HIGHWAY
PROJECT INSPECTOR 7318
Under
general supervision, an employee in this class inspects roadway areas within a
Town or other municipality where utilities are being installed, connected or
otherwise modified in order to determine that highway department permit
specifications for such work are being observed. The incumbent also inspects new house
construction and makes similar determinations.
Work is reviewed through conferences and progress reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Inspects utility work areas adjacent to town roads and highways to determine utility compliance with town highway department permit specifications;
Inspects new house
construction adjacent to town roads to determine compliance with permit
specifications concerning utility hookups, proper placement of surveyor marker
etc.;
Inspects town roads,
sidewalks, storm drains, etc. and reports on conditions as directed;
May testify in court
concerning site conditions on or adjacent to town roads;
May perform the duties of
a Highway Labor Crew Leader if required.

CHARACTERISTICS
Through
knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and equipment common to public
works construction projects; thorough knowledge of the requirements, rules and
regulations governing utility construction adjacent to town roads; good
knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions of public
works and utilities construction; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to plan, assign and supervise
the work of crews and equipment in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; ability to understand, interpret and effectively carry out written
or oral instructions accompanied by construction or other plans and documents;
ability to keep records and make reports; physical condition commensurate with
the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and five (5) years of experience in highway maintenance and
construction work.
