DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists in the planning and directing of the operations of a village public works department in the care of public roads, waterways, grounds and buildings.  Under the general supervision of the Village Superintendent, the incumbent supervises personnel directly responsible for the maintenance of public facilities and utilities.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Issues work orders based on project authorizations from the Village Super­intendent of Public Works;

          Inspects work in progress and upon completion;

          Assists in the maintenance of a program for planting, spraying, fertiliz­ing, trimming and removing trees and shrubs on village right-of-way;

          Supervises the maintenance of automotive and mechanical equipment such as trucks, asphalt sprayers, leaf loaders and snowplows;

          Assists in the maintenance of cemeteries, parks and playgrounds, and takes measures to preserve lakes and ponds.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of supervisory principles and practices; thorough knowledge of techniques and methods of road construction and maintenance; ability to delegate authority and to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to conduct and maintain effective public relations; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and one (1) year of experience in the administration and/or supervision of the maintenance of roads, waterways, grounds or buildings; or,

          b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and five (5) years of experience performing maintenance of roads, waterways, grounds or buildings, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervi­sory or administrative capacity; or,

          (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
