DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class is
responsible for the operation of the sign shop including the production of
signs for County buildings and roads.
This includes the design, construction, installation, and repair of all
signs in accordance with the manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices and New
York State Building Codes. The incumbent
is expected to use independent judgment and initiative as well as decision
making skills in determining the types of signs needed for a variety of
buildings and roads. Performs related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans,
assigns and supervises the work of the production of signs;
Instructs
staff in various painting techniques and in the use of shop equipment,
including computerized sign making systems;
Prepares
cost and time estimates for sign projects;
Maintains
an inventory of supplies and materials necessary for the fabrication of various
types of signs;
Meets
with various department heads or their representatives to determine their sign needs;
Prepares
all contract specifications for sign materials and supplies;
Diagnoses
sign problems and implements a plan of action to
correct them.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, materials,
techniques, and terminology used in the sign making trade; thorough knowledge
of relevant New York State laws and regulations; thorough knowledge of the
occupational hazards of the trade and appropriate safety precautions; thorough
knowledge in the use of computer assisted sign making systems; skill in the
laying out of sign projects and artistic techniques; ability to plan, assign
and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; ability to maintain records, physical condition commensurate with
the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by NY State with an Associate's
Degree in Art, Design or a related field, and five (5) years of
experience in sign painting, two (2) years of which must have been in a
supervisory position; or,
(b) Two
(2) years of vocational or technical training in the field of art or design and
five (5) years of experience in sign painting, two (2) years of which must have
been in a supervisory position; or,
(c)
Seven (7) years of experience in sign painting and fabrication, two (2) years
of which must have been in a supervisory position.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2)
years of permanent service as a Sign Painter II.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and during employment in this title employees
must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
