DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
OF THE CLASS
An employee in this
class supervises and participates in the design, layout and lettering of signs
used for traffic control, public buildings and public facilities. The incumbent must be highly skilled in the
techniques of sign making and able to organize the work to attain maximum
efficiency and output. An employee in this
class may work with wood and metal, a computer assisted design system, a
scanner, and a router. The work calls
for independent judgment and initiative in the performance of duties and is
subject to general supervision during and upon completion of assigned
tasks. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises
the layout of highway markings at railroad crossings, schools, parking stalls
and other special areas;
Determines methods and materials to be used in making
signs;
Coordinates the production of highway direction signs,
traffic control signs and reflector signs;
Oversees the production of outdoor information signs used
at parks and toll stations;
Directs the preparation of sign blanks and reflectorized
facings for the making of road and traffic signs with a heat lamp vacuum
applicator;
Supervises and participates in skilled sign lettering for
directional signs, street and name signs;
Designs, plans, organizes and supervises the cutting and
painting of special plywood signs.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in making signs; thorough knowledge of the New York State Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Signs; superior skill in the artistic laying out of signs; good skill in the techniques of mixing, matching and blending of paints; knowledge of computer assisted sign making; ability to supervise support staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain accurate records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by NY State with an Associate's Degree in Art, Design,
or a related field, and two (2) years of experience in the making or painting
of signs; or,
(b) Two (2) years of vocational or technical training in
the field of art or design, and two (2) years of experience in the making or
painting of signs; or,
(c) Four (4) years of experience in the making or
painting of signs; or,
(d) A satisfactory equivalent combination of the above
education or training and experience as defined by the limits of (a), (b), and
(c).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and during employment
in this title employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle
in New York State.
