FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class supervises the design and production of signs used for traffic control and for public buildings and facilities. The incumbent is responsible for selecting materials to be used, requisitioning supplies and equipment and maintaining routine records. Personnel supervised may include sign painters, maintenance mechanics, equipment operators and laborers. The Paint Shop Crew Leader receives supervision from an administrative superior who reviews performance through consultation, conferences and periodic checks of the work performed by the unit. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises skilled Sign Painters in
the design, construction, lettering and painting of signs used for traffic
control and for information and directions at public buildings and facilities;
Plans, assigns and supervises the
layout and painting of road markings including railroad and pedestrian
crossings, stop lines, center lines and markings for parking stalls;
Instructs subordinates in
silk-screening, stenciling and spray painting techniques and in the use of shop
equipment, such as routers for cutting lettering and kilns for baking metallic
signs;
Selects materials, paints, stains to
be used in the production of special signs;
Makes estimates of time, labor and
materials required for the completion of projects and assignments; requisitions
equipment and supplies;
Maintains routine clerical records on
the work of the unit.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the methods, materials and tools of sign painting; thorough
knowledge of the New York State Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Signs; skill
in painting and lettering with brushes and lettering pens; superior skill in
the techniques of mixing, matching and blending paints; superior skill in the artistic
layout of signs; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates
in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain
clerical records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
(a) Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with an
Associate's Degree in Art, Design, or a related field, and three (3) years of
experience in the making or painting of signs, one (1) year of which must have
been in a supervisory position; or,
(b) Two (2) years of vocational or
technical training in the field of art or design, and three (3) years of
experience in the making or painting of signs, one (1) year of which must have
been in a supervisory position; or,
(c) Five (5) years of experience in
the making or painting of signs, one (1) year of which must have been in a
supervisory position.
(d) A satisfactory equivalent
combination of the above education or training and experience as defined by the
limits of (a), (b), and (c).
