DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class assists in the administration of the Parks and Sanitation Departments for a Town, including the construction, maintenance, custodial services, and security functions.  Intermediate supervisors oversee the various areas of service involved.  The incumbent assists the Director in preparation and presentation of the departments' budgets. The work is reviewed by the Town Director of Facilities Management through conferences, reports, and direct observation of results.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Responsible for the operation of the departments in the absence of the Director;

          Assists the Director in the preparation and presentation of annual budgets for the department;

          Draws specifications and plans for Parks projects;

          Plans and executes the day-to-day tasks of the departments with particular emphasis on blue collar operations;

          Responsible for orientation, training, and supervision of all blue-collar employ­ees in the department;

          Coordinates and schedules all evening, night security, and custodial personnel;

          Coordinates manpower and equipment utilization between divisions;

          Directly supervises Maintenance Crew Leaders, Automotive Crew Leaders, and Sanitation Site Supervisors;

          Does related work as required.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of methods, procedures, materials and equipment utilized in the major building trades; through knowledge of marina facilities and the practices and techniques necessary for their operation and maintenance; thorough knowledge of the State and local laws and regulations governing the proper disposal of waste in marine areas and in landfills; ability to plan and supervise the work of a large staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience performing duties in at least three (3) of the following areas:  maintenance of grounds, buildings, beaches, or sanitation facili­ties; one (1) year of this experience must have been in a supervisory or administra­tive capacity.

 

NOTE:  Education beyond high school may be substituted for non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of four (4) years.
