DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the supervision of a number of employees engaged in the installation, maintenance and repair of parks and recreation equipment.  The incumbent is responsible for the preparation of the budget for the unit, requisition of equipment and supplies and the submission of periodic reports on the work of the unit.  Work is subject to review by an administrative supervisor through consultation, staff conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required.         

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Plans, assigns and supervises a number of maintenance and skilled personnel in the installation, maintenance and repair of playground and park equipment;

            Assigns and supervises minor carpentry and electrical repairs on town park and recreation buildings;

            Supervises the routine maintenance of park motor vehicles and machinery;

            Recommends departmental maintenance and rebuilding programs and for additional equipment for park facilities;

            Prepares periodic progress reports on the work of the unit and evaluations of the performance of employees;

            Prepares the annual budget for the unit, including cost estimates on materials and equipment needed in the course of the maintenance program.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the methods used in the repair and installation of park and playground equipment; good knowledge of the tools, terminology and practices of the maintenance and construction trades; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to make accurate estimates of labor, time and materials; ability to keep accurate records; ability to prepare, interpret and work from blueprints and technical sketches and plans; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in the performance or direction of a variety of maintenance or construction activities.

           

            NOTE:  Additional experience as described above will be substituted for the high school education on a year-for-year basis.
