DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for setting-up and carrying-out administrative controls on the work performed by maintenance personnel on the buildings, grounds, trees, docks, beaches, and other properties owned by a large township.  The employee also supervises and controls the work in a central stock room and an automotive repair shop.  Work is primarily administrative in nature and although the employee does review work in progress and upon completion for adherence to predetermined standards, he is not expected to have journeyman knowledge of the trades which he supervises. Supervision is exercised over a number of employees working in trades, mainte­nance, and grounds keeping classifications.  Assignments are received from the department head in the form of maintenance and repair projects to be completed and time schedules to be adhered to.  Work is reviewed through conferences and reports submitted.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assigns projects to specialized crews and individual tradesmen engaged in dock, buildings, grounds and tree maintenance activities;

          Reviews the work in progress to insure adherence to time schedules and to departmental standards;

          Makes progress and costs reports of finished projects;

          Supervises the maintenance of a central supply room;

          Requisitions supplies and equipment;

          Maintains time, supplies, and equipment records;

          Prepares requests for workers, equipment, and supplies for approval prior to the submission of the annual budget.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of modern buildings and grounds operation and maintenance practices; good knowledge of basic principles of plumbing, painting, plastering, masonry and carpentry; good knowledge of the tools, terminology and practices of mechanical and construction trades; some knowledge of store room methods and procedures; some knowledge of the necessary precautions inherent in the build­ing, grounds, docks, and tree maintenance trades; ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of a large staff in a manner conductive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain records and to prepare reports, ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commen­surate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience in the performance and/or supervision of a variety of buildings and grounds maintenance activities.

 

NOTE:  Additional education beyond high school may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four (4) years.

             Additional experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.
