DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising and participating in a crew for the care and maintenance of trees on municipally owned property. Work includes the assignment of tasks to be done, maintenance of safety precautions and the methods and degree of tree trimming.   Work consists of overseeing proper operation and maintenance of a variety of tree pruning and cutting tools. General supervision is received by an administrative supervisor and the work is reviewed through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises and works with a crew involved in tree trimming and in the performance of various assignments; repairs and removes fallen trees; prunes limbs near utilities and hazardous places; sprays chemicals for insects and diseases;

            Reviews the work performed for safe conditions and procedures to protect the workers, citizens and equipment;

            May drive a truck, hauling crew, equipment and materials to and from work sites;

            Maintains records of equipment used, fuels consumed, time worked and assignments completed;

            Describes procedures and practices used to repair and heal ailing trees.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of climbing and pruning practices and methods; thorough knowledge of ropes, knots, tools and the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; thorough knowledge of the operation and care of tree cutting and spraying equipment; good knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; good knowledge of common insects and fungi affecting trees and shrubs and the materials and methods of controlling them; skill in the use of chain saws, shears, sprayers and other standard equipment of the work; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to power and manually operated tools and equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to lead the work of employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            Either:

            (a) Six (6) years of experience in grounds maintenance work which includes the responsibility for tree trimming and spraying; or,

            (b) Two (2) years of experience as a Tree Trimmer I.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must possess the appropriate license issued by the New York State Depart­ment of Motor Vehicles.  Type of license will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated.  License must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
