DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for issuing work orders, submitting reports on work progress and by assuming the more routine administrative responsibilities in the maintenance and improvement of municipal grounds.  Supervision is exercised over support supervisors and a large number of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers; and is received from an administrative supervisor through conferences and the review of written reports. Does related work as required.

           

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Receives project authorizations from an administrative supervisor; issues work orders, requisitions, necessary supplies and materials; inspects work during progress and upon completion; submits reports on work progress;

            Supervises, assigns and reviews the work of support staff engaged in maintaining and improving municipal grounds, maintaining and improving parking lots and drainage and the application of pesticides and herbicides; surveys grounds for conditions of lawns, shrubbery, curbs and sidewalks;

            Reviews operation methods of support staff to determine adherence to departmental standards and procedures; maintains records of departmental operations;

            Requisitions materials and supplies;

            Assists in the preparation of the annual budget;

            Assists in the maintenance of grounds records.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of grounds operation and maintenance practices; good knowledge of the basic principles used in the propagating, planting and general care of plants, flowers, shrubs and lawns; Good knowledge of the tools terminology and practices of groundskeeping and construction trades; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of support supervisors and skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to estimate labor time and materials and to keep accurate records; ability to prepare, interpret and work from technical sketches, specifications and plans; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

           

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and six (6) years of experience in large-scale grounds maintenance work.

           

NOTE:  Additional experience, as described above, will be substituted for the high school education on a year-for-year basis.

            Additional education from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
