DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs responsible administrative and supervisory duties in planning and directing the maintenance and improvement of municipal grounds.  The incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgment and initiative in the performance of duties.  Supervision is exercised over intermediate supervisors and a large number of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers; and is received from an administrative supervisor through conferences and the review of written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

     Supervises a variety of grounds maintenance and improvement activities;

     Performs inspections of grounds to observe results of the work performed;

     Plans, lays-out and assigns work projects developed by administrative supervisors;

     Supervises varied maintenance of grounds including such tasks as the seeding and mowing of lawns, the planting and pruning of trees and shrubbery, the raking of leaves, the cleaning of ice and snow the maintenance and improvement of parking lots and drainage and the application of pesticides and herbicides;

     Makes periodic preventive maintenance checks; recommends grounds repairs and improvements; estimates labor and material costs;

     Reviews and approves, where justified, recommendations for improvements made by personnel, and approves requisitions for materials and supplies used in the maintenance and improving of grounds;

     Maintains records, prepares and submits reports of ground maintenance activities.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Comprehensive knowledge of grounds operations and maintenance practices; thorough knowledge of the basic principles used in planting and general care of plants, flowers, shrubs and lawns and in the use and application of herbicides and pesticides; thorough knowledge of the tools, terminology and practices of grounds keeping and construction trades; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of personnel in a manner conductive to full performance and high morale;  ability to estimate labor, time and materials, and to keep accurate records;  ability to prepare, interpret and work from technical sketches, specifications and plans;  ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;  physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

     OPEN COMPETITIVE

     Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and eight (8) years of experience in large-scale grounds maintenance work, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

 

NOTE: Additional experience, as described above, will be substituted for the high school education on a year-for-year basis.

        Additional education from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university will be substituted for non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis.

      

  PROMOTIONAL

  One (1) year of permanent competitive status as an Assistant Grounds Superintendent.
