DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the direct supervision of the Ferry Captain, an employee in this class performs various duties aboard a ferryboat. The incumbent assists passengers as necessary and helps to maintain the ferryboat. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Steers a ferryboat;

          Takes a deck watch to insure the security of the ferryboat and cargo;

          Assists passengers on and off the ferryboat as necessary;

          Loads and discharges vehicles;

          Assists in the general maintenance of ferryboats, such as chipping, grind­ing, sandblasting, priming, and painting;

          Assists in the cleaning of the ferryboat and equipment.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the procedures necessary to safely steer a ferryboat; thorough knowledge of the ferryboat routes; good knowledge of security measures for the safety of the ferryboat and the passengers; good knowledge of the maintenance of ferryboats; skill in steering and maintenance of ferryboats; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; ability to understand and carry out oral instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
