DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for conducting training courses and administering written and performance tests of bus drivers to ensure that all drivers meet current NYS Department of Motor Vehicle requirements and standards.  The incumbent coordinates the maintenance and safety inspection of the buses, as well as assisting with scheduling runs and assigning drivers. Supervision is received from the School Transportation Supervisor who reviews the work through conferences, written reports and results of state inspections. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Conducts basic, advanced, refresher, and other specialized training programs for bus drivers;

            Conducts written and performance tests of bus drivers;

            Performs bus driver file audits as required by NYS DMV;

            Performs defensive driving observations and driver abstract interviews;

            Answers phones and monitors two-way communication system;

            Assists in maintaining gas, oil, and maintenance records of school bus equipment and preparing of employee time reports;

            Assists in scheduling runs and assigning drivers;

            Operates school bus on occasion.

           

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance and inspection practices, procedures and policies governing bus transportation; thorough knowledge of training procedures, thorough knowledge of New York State motor vehicle laws, New York State Department of Transportation laws and all relevant laws and regulations governing bus transportation; good knowledge of school bus operation and the techniques; some knowledge of office equipment and its operation; some knowledge of the geography of the school district; ability to operate simple communication equipment; ability to keep records and to prepare written reports; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in a 19A Examiner or School Bus Driver Instructor position within a public transportation system.  

           

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

At the time of appointment, employees must possess a Motor Vehicles 19A Examiners certificate issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles and a School Bus Driver Instructor certificate issued by NYS Department of Education.

 

At the time of appointment, employees must possess the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The type of license required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated. Certificates and licenses required must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

           

Candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the NYS Commissioner of Education.

           

Drivers must be at least 21 years of age.
