SCHOOL BUS DRIVER 7377
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
general supervision, an employee in this class performs supervisory work in
addition to operating a school bus.
Work includes the training and supervision of employees and
responsibility for maintaining equipment in a safe working condition. The employee is also responsible for keeping
mileage, service and repair records, and preparing time reports. Work is performed under the general
supervision of an administrative superior who reviews work through oral and
written reports. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises and participates in the operation of school buses on regularly scheduled routes; transports students to special events;
Directs the routine
servicing and cleaning activities of school bus drivers;
Maintains gas, oil, and maintenance records of school bus equipment and prepares employee time reports.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of school bus operation and the techniques and methods used in
servicing and effecting minor repairs to such equipment; good knowledge of the geography of the
school district and of traffic regulations pertaining to school bus
operation; good knowledge of the motor
vehicles laws and safety precautions pertaining to school bus operation; skill in the operation of a school bus; ability to plan, assign and supervise the
work of subordinates in a manner conductive to full performance and high
morale; ability to operate a school bus
safely and efficiently in traffic, and under adverse weather conditions; ability to keep records and to prepare
written reports; ability to understand
and carry out oral and written instructions;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of eight (8) school grades, and three (3) years experience in the operation of automotive equipment.
NOTE: Additional
experience will be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
Possession of the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.
Drivers must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
The type of license required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated. License must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
