DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs skilled manual work involving the use
of various bridge equipment and tools.
This is beginning level bridge maintenance work. The incumbent uses physical strength and
ability to perform work. Supervision is
received from a Bridge Maintenance Mechanic II or Bridge Maintenance Mechanic
III through inspections and oral reports.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Performs
strenuous tasks in bridge maintenance; replaces or strengthens timbers; lays
out, cuts, punches and drills through steel; scrapes wire brushes, and does
other cleaning;
Does woodwork such as
installing decking stringers, braces, handrails and headings on wooden bridges;
Rigs and erects
scaffolding; works from special scaffolding over water;
Prepares surfaces for
paint by use of sand blasting equipment, chisels and chipping hammers; mixes
and applies red lead and heavy metallic base paint to bridge surfaces with
brushes or spray gun;
Loads and unloads
materials and tools and performs a variety of other semi-skilled or unskilled
tasks as assigned;
Operates pumps, electric
compressors, electric hammers, paving breakers and electric drills; operates
saws, mechanical winches and hoists, and other tools and equipment of a similar
nature as the job requires; splices wire and rope, repairs tackle, and does
similar rigging work;
Does a variety of road
resurfacing on bridge approaches; resurfaces road edges; cleans draining holes
on bridges, and drains on right-of-way; fills expansion joints on bridges,
aprons and curbings with tar; erects signs, posts and barricades where needed;
Prepares and patches
concrete structures utilizing epoxy and concrete materials.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the materials, equipment and repair methods commonly employed in
repairing, renovating or reconstructing wooden, concrete and steel bridges;
good knowledge of the hazards and necessary precautions in rigging and in
working under extreme weather conditions; good knowledge of the methods,
materials, tools and practices used in building of heavy timber and structural
steel bridges; skill in the manipulation of ropes and equipment used in
rigging; skill in the application of paint using brushes and spray guns; skill
in the use of common hand tools; ability and willingness to do heavy manual
work; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and one (1) year of experience in two or more trades pertinent to the
maintenance and repair of bridge structures.
NOTE:
Additional experience will be substituted for education on a year-for-year
basis.
