DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in the class supervises work crews in a variety of specialized manual tasks related to the maintenance and minor reconstruction of County bridges.  The incumbent is responsible for seeing that schedules are met, that adequate supplies and equipment are on hand for the work and that time records are kept.  Assignments are received from an administrative supervisor who reviews work through inspections or through oral and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises the cleaning, painting, strengthening timbers, repairing machinery, resurfacing approaches and other maintenance and repair tasks performed on County bridges;

          Drives truck transporting crews and equipment to and from the job; in the winter, may drive truck with attached snow plow used in clearing bridges and approaches;

          Requisitions supplies and equipment; maintains daily time records; prepares and submits reports on work accomplished.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the materials, equipment and repair methods commonly employed in repairing, renovating or reconstructing wooden, concrete and steel bridges; thorough knowledge of the hazards and necessary precautions in rigging, and in working under extreme weather conditions; thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices used in the building of heavy timber and structural steel bridges; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain records, and to prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the demand of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and five (5) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of bridge structures.

 

NOTE:  Additional experience will be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates must possess the appropriate New York State driver’s license, and maintain such license throughout employment in this title.
