DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the direct supervision of the Ferry Captain, an employee in this class performs various duties aboard a ferryboat between Fishers Island and New London, assists passengers as necessary and helps to maintain the ferryboat. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Steers a ferryboat between Fishers Island and New London;

          Takes a deck watch to insure the security of the ferryboat and cargo;

          Assists passengers on the ferryboat as necessary;

          Loads and discharges vehicles;

          Assists in the general maintenance of ferryboats, such as chipping, grinding, sandblasting; priming, and painting;

          Cleans and maintains New London terminal and terminal equipment;

          May operate forklifts and tractors in order to pull the flats used to carry freight.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the procedures necessary to safely steer a ferryboat; thorough knowledge of the ferryboat routes; good knowledge of security measures for the safety of the ferryboat and the passengers; good knowledge of the maintenance of ferryboats and terminal equipment; skill in steering and mainte­nance of ferryboats; ability to establish and maintain effective working rela­tionships with other employees and the public; ability to understand and carry out oral instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
