DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for supervising the operation and maintenance of engines, motors, pumps and machinery aboard a dredge.  The Chief Engine Operator plans and supervises the work necessary for the operation, repair, maintenance, and servicing of engines, generators, and hydraulic equipment on a dredge.  Employees are responsible for personally performing the more complex maintenance and repair jobs.  Assignments are received through reports and conferences.  Supervision is exercised over Dredge Engine Operators through assignment of shifts and by review of their work.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

               Supervises the operation of gasoline and diesel engines and related equipment aboard a dredge;

               Makes checks and schedules periodic overhauling to maintain machinery and equipment in operating condition;

               Assigns, plans and supervises the work of Dredge Engine Operators, trade workers and maintenance mechanics;

               Works with administrative supervisors to determine priorities and establish personnel and equipment requirements;

               Supervises and participates in the more complex repair work;

               Requisitions and keeps inventory on supplies, spare parts and tools.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of dredge operations, equipment, and maintenance of dredge equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; good knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; good knowledge of the operation of machinists' equipment and tools; ability to perform "all position welding" of fillet and groove welds for shield metal arc welding; ability to plan, supervise and review the work of employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain routine inventory records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Six (6) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy machinery and generating equipment.
