FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under the general supervision of the Marine Operations
Supervisor, an employee in this class receives and verifies incoming freight,
and maintains simple financial records concerning freight that is shipped to
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Receives and verifies freight consigned to
Collects money for prepaid
shipments;
Determines applicable charges
according to current tariffs for freight and collects fees or charges accounts;
Completes freight and charge slips
to be debited against traffic and car accounts and delivers slips to Ferry
District Office;
Notifies Fishers Island Freight
Agent concerning C.O.D. shipments requiring payment for consignees;
Maintains petty cash fund;
Compiles daily cash report and
delivers cash and report to authorized personnel for deposit;
May answer Ferry District Office
telephone and dispense information as needed;
May operate forklifts and tractors
in order to pull the flats used to carry freight;
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the procedures regarding the
receipt of freight at Fishers Island; good knowledge of the current tariffs for
freight received; ability to understand and accurately record freight charges;
ability to calculate fees and maintain simple financial records; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with the employees;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a standard
senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one
(1) year of experience in the maintenance of basic clerical and/or cash control
records, storekeeping; or as an employee of the Ferry District.
NOTE: Additional education
beyond high school from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State may be substituted for the above experience on a
year-for-year basis.
