FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class operates, and supervises crewmembers in the operation of ferryboats on scheduled routes between Fishers Island and New London, Connecticut. The employee maintains complete records of the voyages. The work is supervised by the Marine Operations Supervisor through conferences and the safe and efficient transport of passengers and cargo. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Operates or supervises the operation of ferryboats in
compliance with safety regulations;
Supervises crew members who steer
and maintain the ferryboat, assist in the loading and discharging of passengers
or take deck watch;
Maintains complete records of
voyages, including unusual events;
Adheres to published schedule
whenever possible;
Authorizes the delay or canceling of
any ferryboat departure due to severe weather conditions or any unusual
circumstances that would render a passage unsafe;
Participates in ferryboat and
terminal maintenance as directed by the Marine Operations Supervisor.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of all aspects of the operation of
ferryboats in compliance with safety regulations, including the steering and
maintenance of ferryboats; thorough knowledge of procedures to ensure the
security of the ferryboat and its passengers; skill in the steering and
maintenance of ferryboats; ability to record comprehensive details about
voyages; ability to supervise employees in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to instruct trainees in all aspects of
ferryboat operations and maintenance; ability to act quickly and calmly in
emergency situations; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
There are no minimum qualifications for this position.
At the time of appointment, and during employment in this
title, the employee is required to possess a valid operator's license issued by
the United States Coast Guard. The type of license necessary will be determined
by the appointing authority.
