DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the general supervision of the Marine Operations Supervisor, an employee in this class performs preventive and daily maintenance of marine diesel engines and auxiliary equipment.  The employee maintains inventory and keeps records concerning all marine engine operations and maintenance.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Performs preventive and daily maintenance of all marine machinery, includ­ing marine diesel engines, freight handling and terminal machinery and equipment;

            Orders and keeps inventory records on spare parts, lubricants and filters for all marine machinery;

            Keeps records concerning engine operations and maintenance.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of marine diesel engine preventive maintenance and repair, electricity, plumbing, heating systems, and various types of pumps; thorough knowledge of marine terminal machinery and equipment; skill in mainte­nance and repair of marine diesel engines and auxiliary equipment; ability to keep inventory records; ability to keep records concerning engine operations and maintenance; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other employees and manufacturers; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Five (5) years of experience in the operation and repair of marine diesel engines and auxiliary equipment.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid Unites States Coast Guard license as engineer of motor vessels over 1000 horsepower, at time of appointment; appointees must maintain a valid license throughout their employment in this title.
