DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in the class supervises the collection and disposal of refuse within a town or village.  The incumbent is responsible for the scheduling of crews and equipment for refuse collection, assuring the conformance of private collectors to established norms and the investigation of public complaints.  Work is reviewed through conferences with supervisors and the submission of written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Schedules and directs crews and support personnel for rubbish collection;

          Oversees private refuse collectors to insure compliance with contractual and sanitary provisions;

          Reviews activities of all collection agencies and receives complaints and investigates them;

          Maintains accurate and complete records of daily activities, complaints and their resolutions;

          Prepares departmental budgets;

          Orders supplies and equipment;

          Makes arrangements for disposal of abandoned autos and other bulk refuse.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of refuse collection practices and equipment and their application to municipal sanitation problems; good knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; good knowledge of investigative techniques and public relations; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Two (2) years of experience in the collection and disposal of refuse.
