DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising the activities of work crews engaged in waste disposal operations at a public landfill or other sanitation site. Work supervised may include the grading, dumping of garbage and backfilling of landfill areas, the building and stabilizing of dirt roads in landfill sites, the collection and sorting of recyclable materials and the operation of a refuse transfer site. The incumbent is responsible for determining work assignments, giving instructions on work procedures and methods and inspecting work performed. Supervision is received from a Sanitation Supervisor or other supervisor through consultation and observation of performance. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assigns and supervises the work of equipment operators at a landfill site, involved in excavating sand, dumping garbage, covering the refuse with fill and compacting the filled areas;

          Supervises the grading of roads and filled areas in the site in accordance with specifications provided by a technical engineering staff;

          Supervises the work of Laborers engaged in collecting and sorting recyclable materials, such as glass, newspapers and aluminum containers;

          Directs the filling, compacting and transporting of roll-off bins used at a refuse transfer site;

          Schedules and assigns the work of crews in picking up debris on public roads and property;

          Maintains attendance and other routine records on the work supervised.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the procedures and methods used in the operations of sanitary landfills or similar sanitation sites; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to waste disposal operations; good knowledge of the operational characteristics and maintenance requirements of automotive and heavy equipment; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand, interpret and carry out oral and written instructions, accompanied by technical plans; ability to maintain records and prepare routine reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in the collection or disposal of refuse; or,

          Satisfactory equivalent combination of the above education and experience.
