DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for coordinating and supervising the assignment of labor crews and equipment required to maintain landfills and/or resource recovery sites.  Work is performed under the general direction of an administrative supervisor; but the incumbent is expected to perform with a minimum of direct supervision.  Supervision is exercised over a number of labor crews through crew leaders.  Does related work as required.

           

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Coordinates the activities of a number of labor crews engaged in the excavation, filling, and covering of landfills;

            Supervises material stockpiling and source separation at resource recovery sites;

            Supervises the modification and construction of facility shelters.

            Determines maintenance requirements through inspections of work areas such as access roads, weigh-in-facilities and other existing structures; directs the immediate repair of facilities or reports major deficiencies to supervisors;

            Maintains inventory of materials;

            Requisitions equipment;

            Keeps records of the location and use of materials and equipment;

            Instructs personnel in the use of excavation equipment.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the procedures and methods used in the operation of landfills and resource recovery sites; thorough knowledge of the types and uses of equipment related to municipal landfills and road maintenance; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to waste disposal operation; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of labor crews in a manner conducive to full performance an high morale; ability to keep records and make reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

           

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and six (6) years of experience in highway maintenance and/or construction, or landfill operation and maintenance, three (3) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.   

 

NOTE:  Experience must include operation of front-end loaders, bulldozers and graders.
