DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class supervises and participates in the
collection, enforcement, maintenance and repair activities of a town or village
parking meter department. The employee
is responsible for planning, assigning, and coordinating the activities of
subordinate personnel and for maintaining all department records. Supervision is exercised over parking meter
officers, collectors, repairers, and clerical personnel. Work is supervised by an administrative
superior through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Issues daily
instructions to parking meter department personnel;
Checks subordinates'
reports and summonses for compliance with local law, ordinances and regulations;
Inspects town or
village parking meters on a regular basis to insure that they are in proper
working order; inspects all meter maintenance and repair work;
Conducts surveys of
the municipality's streets and prepares plans for proposed meter installations;
Prepares progress
reports pertaining to meter installations, their maintenance and repair;
prepares periodic damage reports for submission to administrative superior;
May participate in the
maintenance and repair of parking meters when necessary.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the local ordinances and parking regulations; good
knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and practice used in the
maintenance and repair of parking meters; good knowledge of effective
supervisory techniques; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of
subordinate personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high
morale; ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner;
ability to maintain departmental records and to prepare and submit reports;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma
recognized by the New York State Department of Education and two years of
experience in parking meter maintenance and repair or related maintenance work.
Education will be substituted
for experience on a year-for-year basis.
