DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the operation of a
Type 2B water treatment plant facility as well as a Type 3B sewage treatment
facility subject to the regulatory control of State and County health and
conservation agencies. The work is
reviewed by technically qualified and/or licensed superiors through
conferences, reports and direct observation of plant operations.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Operates,
maintains and makes minor repairs to pumps, valves, motors, air compressors and
related machines and equipment;
Regulates and adjusts
chlorinators, corrosion control devices and/or other treatment equipment;
Tests for chlorine and PH
levels of treated water; adds required chemical in prescribed quantities and
frequencies;
Takes samples of water
for bacteriological and chemical analysis, keeps logs of plant operations;
Treats and disposes of
sludge; adds chlorine to sewage; takes samples of sewage for testing; makes
necessary tests for control of plant operations;
Performs custodial duties
in connection with the maintenance of buildings and grounds.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the principles, practices and equipment used in the operation and
maintenance of a Type 2B water treatment plant with facilities for the
application of chemicals to the water; working knowledge of physics, chemistry,
bacteriology and Long Island Hydrology as they relate to water purification;
skill in the operation and basic repair of pumps, valves, motors and related
machinery and equipment; ability to read, understand and accurately record data
from meters, gauges and scales; ability to perform routine field tests for
control of plant operations; thorough knowledge of the practices and equipment
used in the operation and maintenance of a Type 3B sewage treatment plant with
facilities for chemical precipitation, sludge vacuum filtration, sludge
incineration, separate sludge digestion, or any other biological oxidation
process other than the activated sludge and the stabilization or oxidation pond
process; thorough knowledge of the principles and applications of physics,
chemistry and bacteriology as applied to sewage treatment and disposal; skill
in the operation and repair of pumps, valves, and related mechanical and
electrical equipment; ability to read, understand and record data from gauges,
scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for
control of meters; ability to understand and carry out oral and written
instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a minimum of a Type 2B Water Treatment Plant Operator's
license issued by the New York State Department of Health at the time of
appointment, and possession of a minimum of a Type 3B Sewage Treatment Plant
Operator's license issued by the New York State Department of Environmental
Control at the time of appointment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Appointees must maintain current certifications in the above areas for
the duration of their employment in this title.
