DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
operates a small Type IIB water treatment plant without facilities for
filtration which produces 2.5 million gallons or less per day or, in a larger
IIB facility, assists a Senior IIB Water Treatment Plant Operator. This employee may also work in a IB plant as
an assistant to the IB Water Treatment Plant Operator. The incumbent monitors, operates and
maintains one or more ground-well pumping stations, applies chemicals to the
water distribution system, and monitors and regulates reservoir level. This class differs from other classes of
Water Treatment Plant Operators by virtue of the size of the population served,
the type of treatment performed and the type of certification required; these
criteria are established by the New York State Sanitary Code. The Operator works independently, and may
supervise subordinate personnel and instruct Water Treatment Plant Operator
Trainees. The work is reviewed by a
technically qualified and certified supervisor through conferences, reports
and/or direct observation of plant operations. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Operates, maintains and makes minor repairs to pumps,
valves, motors and related machinery and equipment;
Records readings of meters, gauges
and scales;
Regulates and adjusts chlorinators,
corrosion control devices and/or other treatment equipment;
Adds required chemicals in
prescribed quantities and frequencies;
Tests for chlorine and/or pH level
of treated water, and makes other field tests as required;
Takes samples of water for
bacteriological and chemical testing by an outside laboratory;
Keeps logs of plant operations;
May supervises the work of
subordinate employees and assist in the instruction of trainees;
May perform custodial duties in
connection with the maintenance of buildings and grounds.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of
the principles, practices and equipment used in the operation and maintenance
of a Type IIB water treatment plant with facilities for the application of
chemicals to the water; working knowledge of physics, chemistry, bacteriology
and Long Island hydrology as they relate to water purification; skill in the
operation and basic repair of pumps, valves, motors and related machinery and
equipment; ability to read, understand and accurately record data from meters,
gauges and scales; ability to supervise in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to perform routine field tests for control
of plant operations; ability to understand and carry out oral and written
instructions; ability to instruct trainees in all aspects of plant operations;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Possession of a Type IB or IIB Water Treatment Plant
Operator's certification, issued by the New York State Department of Health.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
Appointees must
maintain a current IB or IIB certification throughout their employment in this
title.
