DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class assists in the technical and administrative operation of a Type IIB water treatment system without facilities for filtration which produces 2.5 million gallons or less of water daily and serves more than 1,000 people. Under direction the incumbent is responsible for supervising the plant maintenance program; assists, and acts in the absence of, the Water District Superintendent in the performance of routine technical and management responsibilities. Supervision is exercised over subordinate supervisors and workers in the repair and maintenance shop and the office supervisor and clerical staff. Work is performed under the direction of the Water District Superintendent who reviews work through conferences and by inspection of Water District operations. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists
in planning, assigning and supervising the operation of a Type IIB public water
treatment and distribution system;
Assists in supervising
all technical, maintenance and clerical personnel in the Water District;
Assists in planning and
supervising the extension of existing treatment and distribution facilities and
the maintenance of those facilities;
Attends meetings,
conventions, and seminars as a representative of the
Superintendent.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the principles, practices and methods used in administering a
Water District. Good knowledge of the functions
and activities of a Type IIB Water Treatment facility; good knowledge of the
operating characteristics of pumping equipment and the chemicals used in the
treatment and distribution of potable water; Basic knowledge of Long Island
hydrology and geology; some knowledge of the principles and practices of
financial administration, public personnel administration and budgeting;
ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates to ensure the efficient,
effective operation of the district; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years experience in
the chemical treatment of potable water, one (1) of which must have been in a
supervisory capacity.
NOTE:
Relevant education from a regionally accredited or New York State registered
college or university may be substituted for non-supervisory, non-
administrative experience on a year-for-year basis.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession
of a minimum of a Type IIB Water Treatment Operator's certificate, issued by
the New York State Department of Health, at the time of appointment. Appointees must maintain that certification
throughout their employment in this title.
