DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class either supervises the operation of a wastewater treatment plant with a point score of 31-55, or works as a shift supervisor in a wastewater treatment plant with a point score of 56-75 that uses the activated sludge process or similar suspended growth nitrogen removal.   Supervision may be exercised over plant support personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises and participates in the starting and stopping of pumps, motors, air compressors, and related machinery and equipment; makes repairs to machinery and equipment and performs minor preventive maintenance; records readings from meters and gauges;

            Treats and disposes of sludge; adds chlorine to wastewater; takes samples of wastewater for testing; makes necessary tests for control of plant operations;

            Cleans and maintains bar screens, sewers and tanks;

            Instructs or assists in instructing trainees; supervises the work of laborers, helpers, and other support personnel; keeps a log of plant operations and related records;

            Performs custodial duties in connection with the maintenance of buildings and grounds;

            Paints equipment, structures and sewerage facilities.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the practices used and equipment required in the opera­tion and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant which utilizes the activated sludge process; good knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment and disposal; some knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operations; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to maintain simple records and prepare routine reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Possession of a Type 2A, 3A or 4A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator's certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

 

            NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

            Candidates must maintain a Grade 2A, 3A or 4A Certificate, issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, while employed in this title.

Depending upon the assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees may be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
