DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this position
customizes a wastewater treatment plant operations database, and supervises and
instructs personnel in its use. An
employee in this position may either supervise the operation of a wastewater
treatment plant with a point score of 56-75 points or work as an assistant
operator in a wastewater treatment plant, which uses the activated sludge
process, and has a point score of 76 or greater. Supervision may be exercised over laborers
and plant support personnel. The work is
reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences, reports, and
observation of the system's performance.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Configures,
maintains, modifies and updates a specialized data base system to conform to
the needs of official state and federal reports regarding wastewater treatment
operations;
Trains wastewater
treatment plant operators in the use of a data base system to create required
state and federal computerized reports;
Develops
procedures for use of the data base system;
Maintains
assorted pumps, motors, and a variety of specialized wastewater treatment
equipment;
Treats
and disposes of sludge; adds chlorine to wastewater; takes samples of
wastewater for testing; makes necessary tests for control of plant operations.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the practices and equipment used in
the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant with a point
score of 56 or greater, which utilizes the activated sludge process; thorough
knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and
bacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment and disposal, skill in the
operation and repair of pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electrical
equipment; good knowledge of electronic data processing systems analysis; ability
to create and understand data base construction and customization, ability to
design and adapt various state and federal wastewater treatment plant operation
reports to a data base system; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with co-workers and users; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; patience; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, possession of a Type 3A or 4A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s
certificate, issued by the New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation, and two (2) years of experience in customizing and maintaining
data base systems used at wastewater treatment plants.
At the time of appointment and during employment in this
title employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New
York State. Employees must
maintain a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s Certificate throughout
employment in this title.
